Travel vaccinations
If you're planning to travel outside the UK, you may need to be vaccinated against some of the serious diseases found in other parts of the world.
Our practice nurses are available by appointment to offer medical advice regarding travel and vaccinations where appropriate.
We recommend sending in our travel risk assessment form as early as possible, preferably at least 6 to 8 weeks before you travel, as some vaccinations require more than one dose and may take time to provide protection.

Remember: Some countries require proof of vaccination (for example, for polio or yellow fever vaccination), which must be documented on an International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis (ICVP) before you enter or when you leave a country.

Travel vaccination and medication funding
Some travel vaccinations are available free of charge on the NHS, including hepatitis A, typhoid, cholera (where appropriate) and polio as part of the combined diphtheria, tetanus and polio vaccine. Other vaccinations, such as hepatitis B, Japanese encephalitis, rabies, tick-borne encephalitis and yellow fever, are not routinely available free on the NHS for travel purposes and will need to be arranged privately. Depending on the vaccination required, you may need to attend a private travel clinic or pharmacy offering travel health services.
Medicines to prevent malaria are not available on an NHS prescription for travel. If malaria prevention is recommended for your destination, you will need to obtain the appropriate medication privately, either from a pharmacy or private travel clinic. The travel risk assessment will help identify whether vaccinations or malaria prevention may be required for your trip.
